EVIL Larry Murphy spoke six chilling words to his wife hours after carrying out a "truly horrific" crime that transformed him into one of Ireland's most notorious figures.

- BY LIAM MCINERNEY

Murphy was working as a freelance carpenter and was a married father-of-two when he abducted a young woman, forcing her into his car boot in Carlow town on February 11, 2000.

The sexual predator then transported her to Kilkea in rural Kildare where he repeatedly raped her.

He subsequently drove her to an isolated area of Wicklow called Spinan's Cross, near his Baltinglass home, where she endured further beatings and rape.

Murphy also placed a black plastic bag over her head and raped her again - before her life was spared when two poachers disturbed her attacker.

He was reportedly moments away from killing her.

Following the attack, he purchased a bottle of whiskey and went home to bed.

When gardai called the next morning, as he had anticipated, he delivered a truly chilling six-word confession to his wife: "I raped a girl last night."

During questioning about escaping before he could murder his victim, whom he raped four times altogether, he remarked in an interview: "Well, she's alive isn't she? She was lucky."
