Single Market access would rebuild growth

TONY Galbraith (Mail Box, September 24) found my arguments backing British access to the European Single Market "unconvincing".

Unsurprising - he clearly holds strong views on Brexit and the EU.

My appeal is instead to readers focusing on today's evidence and priorities, not solely on votes cast nearly a decade ago.

A quarter (23 per cent) of 2016 Leave voters now support rejoining the EU (Redfield & Wilton, August 2024). More relevant here is that more than half (54 per cent) say freedom of movement is acceptable if Britain gets European Single Market access again (YouGov, November 2024).

Unlike Mr Galbraith, most people agree that removing trade barriers with a huge market on our doorstep is a good thing.

I'm uncertain where exactly Mr Galbraith gets his “£80bn per year trade deficit when we were last in the EU”.
