UP plans to amend Madrasa Act to align with SC judgment

The Uttar Pradesh government is considering amending the Uttar Pradesh Board of Madrasa Education Act 2004 to bring it in line with a recent landmark Supreme Court verdict and is likely to exclude graduate and postgraduate courses from the scope of the legislation, people aware of the matter said on Thursday.
Around 16,000 madrasas in the state are affiliated with the UP State Madrasa Board. Around 1,000 of them offer kamil (graduate) and fazil (postgraduate) courses, with nearly 38,000 students enrolled. The duration of the kamil course is three years and that of the Fazil course is two years.
"Preparations are underway for amendments as per the orders of the Supreme Court regarding Kamil and Fazil courses. Soon a meeting will be held at government level to finalise things," a senior official familiar with the matter said, requesting anonymity.
