Nepal busts illegal ring taking citizens to fight for Russia
Hindustan Times
|December 08, 2023
Nepal on Wednesday arrested a gang that had been coercing people into sending young men to be recruited into the Russian army, days after it said it had asked Moscow not to recruit its citizens into the Russian army and immediately send back any.
-
Media reports, quoting an official, said Nepal had arrested 12 people who had been extorting large sums of money from people with the promise of a travel visa, but then had them illegally recruited into the Russian army, which has been fighting the war in Ukraine since last year.
Nepal prohibits its citizens from joining foreign armies, except those of countries with which it has agreements to do so.
Those detained had allegedly procured documents and arranged visas to send people to Russia via India and the United Arab Emirates, according to Nepal district police spokesman Kumud Dhungel.
