India, EU push to conclude FTA ahead of January summit

India and the European Union (EU) are engaged in hectic negotiations to ensure the Free Trade Agreement (FTA) between the two can be concluded before the India-EU Summit in late January, with commerce secretary Rajesh Agrawal visiting Brussels to iron out technical differences ahead of Union commerce minister Piyush Goyal's visit on January 8.
The idea, people familiar with the matter said, is to finalise the FTA first and then fast-track conclusion of other key bilateral pacts such as an Investment Protection Agreement (IPA), an Agreement on Geographical Indications, a Comprehensive Air Transport Agreement and others. India-EU FTA negotiations were launched in June 2022 and there have been 16 rounds of talks so far.
