KOLKATA: West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday urged people not to fall for provocations that could incite communal violence and appeared to accuse the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of inciting communal riots through its "divisive politics", alleging that the Opposition party's "ganda dharma" (dirty religion) was against Hinduism.

The comments evoked sharp reactions from the BJP, which questioned if Banerjee referred to Hindu religion as "ganda dharma".

Speaking at an Eid-ul-Fitr celebration event on Red Road in Kolkata, the chief minister urged residents to avoid falling into provocations that could fuel riots, asserting that her Trinamool Congress (TMC) government will ensure no tensions in the eastern state.
