The Calcutta High Court ordering deployment of central forces in Murshidabad district of West Bengal following the violence last week is a severe indictment of the state administration.

A tenuous peace has held since in the district that saw violent protests against the Waqf (Amendment) Act. The Act is perceived by many as unconstitutional and inimical to the interests of the Muslim community though the Union government says it will improve management of Waqf property and avoid disputes.
