The second US-Iraq war began with a duel of missiles and words. Early on Friday morning (India time), the ground war started, with US and British units crossing the Kuwaiti border into southern Iraq. The border town of Umm Qasr fell to the allies, Kuwait's official news agency reported.
“Operation Iraqi Freedom” had begun.
Some time before midnight on Thursday the US 3rd Infantry Division opened artillery fire on Iraqi positions with Paladin self-propelled howitzers and multiple launch rocket systems.
The first missile strikes began around 90 minutes after Thursday morning’s deadline set by President George W Bush for President Saddam Hussein to leave Iraq.
