NEW DELHI:

Shah also said that the Delhi Police's permission will not be required for construction activities in Delhi, attempting to eliminate what many experts say is a major node for corruption in the department, the people cited above said.

The high-level meeting at the North Block was attended by newly elected chief minister Rekha Gupta, Delhi home minister Ashish Sood, Delhi Police commissioner Sanjay Arora, and senior officers from the police, Delhi government and the Union home ministry. Delhi's lieutenant governor (LG) VK Saxena, who is in charge of law and order in the Capital, was not present.

In the three-hour long review, several issues related to public safety and coordination between the government and the police were discussed, officials said.

"Home minister said the double-engine government of Delhi will work with double speed for a developed and safe Delhi, as per the expectations of Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi," a Union home ministry statement said.

Shah also directed the Delhi Police to take strict action against police stations and subdivisions that consistently perform poorly, stressed on speedy action on traffic jams, and take stringent action against the networks that help "illegal Bangladeshis and Rohingya" entering India, saying it was an issue of national security and should be dealt with strictly.
