20mn Aadhaar cards of dead people deactivated: UIDAI

The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI), the government agency that issues Aadhaar cards, has deactivated more than 20 million Aadhaar numbers belonging to deceased individuals as part of a nationwide exercise to clean and update its database.
According to a statement issued on Wednesday, UIDAI sourced death-related data from the Registrar General of India (RGI), state governments, Union Territories, and several central schemes such as the Public Distribution System and the National Social Assistance Programme. The authority is also exploring tie-ups with financial institutions and other Aadhaar-linked entities to expand its access to death records.
