Budget aimed at poll gains, offers no fix for ailing economy: Oppn

Opposition parties denounced the Union Budget on Saturday, saying it was focused on ensuring electoral gains for the ruling dispensation in poll-bound states while ignoring key economic concerns and needs of a large section of society.

Presenting the budget, Union finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced a tax cut for the salaried section and a slew of schemes for Bihar aimed at job creation and infrastructure development. Former finance minister P Chidambaram said that the budget was aimed at "wooing" the middle class, a key voter base, and the electorate of Bihar, where elections are slated to be held later this year.
