At least 600 devotees were hospitalized in Puri, Odisha, on Friday as a crowd of over a million people converged on the town for the annual Rath Yatra, officials said on Friday, amid extreme heat which was exacerbated by humidity.
BHUBANESWAR:
"Most of those who have been hospitalized complained of suffocation, nausea, uneasiness and fatigue and are being treated accordingly," said Dr Bijay Mohapatra, special secretary of the state health department.
Several devotees pulled the ropes attached with chariots of Lord Jagannath and his siblings on a road near the 12th-century shrine in Puri towards Shree Gundicha temple, around 2.6km away, on the first day of the nine-day festival.
