GST revenue rises 16% to ₹2 lakh cr in May

Gross goods and services tax revenues rose about 16.4% to cross ₹2.01 lakh crore in May, compared to last year, registering the third-highest monthly tax collection, which according to experts provides a cushion to the GST Council for rationalising tax rates.

Gross GST collections rose to ₹2,01,050 crore in May 2025, compared to ₹1,72,739 crore in the same month of 2024. After refunds of ₹27,210 crore in May 2025, net GST revenue stood at ₹1,73,841 crore, a 20.4% growth compared to ₹1,44,381 crore in May 2024, as per government data released on Sunday.

Sequentially, collections of over ₹2 lakh crore in May 2025 came close to the record ₹2.37 lakh crore April 2025 revenue, reflecting resilience of the economy. To be sure, the revenue of May reflects business activities in April. GST collections in April reflect business transactions made in March, the closing month of the previous financial year and hence collections may also include backlogs of previous months. Experts however, see a robust trend here.
