Three labourers died after allegedly inhaling toxic gas while cleaning a sewage drain pipe in Kolkata, West Bengal, police officers said on Sunday.

The incident took place in the Kolkata Leather Complex area of the city at around 9.30am when one of the labourers fell ill while cleaning a sewage tunnel beneath a 10-feet-deep manhole, officials said. The two other labourers then entered the drain pipe to rescue their colleague, the officials said. The incident came to light when local people informed the police.
"One man fell ill after going down the manhole on a public road. The other two went down to rescue him," Kolkata city mayor Firhad Hakim. The deceased were identified as Suman Sardar, Farzan Sheikh and Sheikh Hashim. "Chief minister Mamata Banerjee asked me to rush to Bantala the moment she heard of the incident. The family of each victim will be given a compensation of ₹10 lakh by the state," the mayor said.
