- Pawan Dixit

KOLKATA: A district court in West Bengal sentenced a 37-year-old man to death for the rape and murder of a five-year-old girl in Hooghly district of West Bengal in November last year, police said.

Justice Chandraprabha Chakr aborty of the Chinsurah court in Hooghly district had convicted Ashok Singh on Tuesday under several sections of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (Pocso) Act and the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) after hearing 27 witnesses. He was subsequently awarded the capital punishment on Friday.

The incident took place on the afternoon of November 24 last year, when the child went missing while playing outside her residence in Hooghly district.

"The child's blood-stained, mutilated body was found on Ashok Singh's bed. It was wrapped in a mosquito net," a police officer aware of the matter said, requesting anonymity.
