Student gang-raped near medical college in Bengal

A 23-year-old medical student was allegedly gang-raped by five men in a forested area near her college campus in West Bengal's Durgapur on Friday night, triggering protests by students who accused the institution of delayed action and a political row between the ruling Trinamool Congress and the opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
The second-year MBBS student at a private medical college, originally from Jaleshwar in Odisha, is currently admitted to hospital where she is receiving treatment and psychological counselling. Police registered an FIR under gang rape provisions but made no arrests till 5.30 pm Saturday, even as a few persons were detained for questioning. Her condition was said to be stable.
According to the victim's parents, she had stepped out with a friend to get food on Friday night when three men began following them. Her friend fled, leaving her alone. When she tried to run, the three men caught her and took her to a nearby forest, where two more men joined them.
