After rebuke, SC relief to man in hate speech case

The Supreme Court on Monday granted interim protection from arrest to a West Bengal-based man facing multiple criminal proceedings over his communal social media posts, even as it warned against "hate mongering" and added that such offensive statements are not protected by the constitutional right to free speech.

The court was hearing a petition by Wazahat Khan, whose complaint against social media influencer and law student Sharmishta Panoli, led to her arrest in the backdrop of Operation Sindoor — India's direct military response against Pakistan over the Pahalgam attack.
