Europe’s Right sour on Trump over Greenland
Hindustan Times Delhi
|January 19, 2026
Europe's far-right parties are reassessing their ties to President Donald Trump after he used military force to oust Venezuela’s leader, Nicolas Maduro, and threatened to annex Greenland.
Alice Weidel, co-leader of the nationalist Alternative for Germany party — which German authorities classified as a far-right extremist movement and has developed close ties with the US administration— said Trump was acting no differently from Russia's Vladimir Putin.
“Trump has violated a fundamental campaign promise — namely not to interfere in other countries,” Weidel said. She added that the US president will have to explain his actions to the American voters in the upcoming midterm elections.
The Trump administration has been developing relationships with like-minded movements on the continent. In its recent national security strategy, the US said it would cultivate “resistance to Europe's current trajectory within European nations,” widely interpreted as a tacit offer of support for Europe's far-right parties.
