A strong Indian element suffused the welcome accorded to Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Mauritius and his interactions with the people and leaders of the Indian Ocean country, where almost three-fourths of the population trace their roots to Bihar and Uttar Pradesh.

Shortly after Modi was received on his arrival at Port Louis by Prime Minister Navin Ramgoolam, deputy prime minister, chief justice and speaker of the National Assembly, he was welcomed by members of the Indian community with "Geet Gawai" performed by a traditional Bhojpuri musical ensemble, embodying the cultural heritage brought to Mauritius by women from the Bhojpuri belt.
