Volynets and Veronika make strong start at Charleston Open

Katie Volynets needed less than an hour to complete a 6-0, 6-0 rout of Canadian qualifier Katherine Sebov on Monday in the first round of the Charleston Open.

Volynets, a 22-year-old California native, put 81 percent of her first serves in play and won 81 percent of her first-serve points. She never faced a break point.

Three other 15 players earned victories on Monday: Robin Montgomery topped Bulgaria's Viktoriya Tomova 6-4, 3-6, 3-6; Caroline Dolehide downed Italy's Elisabetta Cocciaretto 6-4, 6-1; and Caty McNally rallied past Xinyu Wang of Anhui, China 4-6, 6-4, 6-4.

Also advancing: Australia's Astra Sharma, France's Varvara Gracheva and Russia's Veronika Kudermetova and Polina Kudermetova.
