Saudi settles jail term for Keralite, rejects harsher punishment

Dismissing the prosecution appeal seeking enhanced punishment, Saudi Supreme Court upheld the lower court verdict against Machilakath Abdul Rahim, 45, a native of Feroke Kodampuzha near here, who has been imprisoned in Riyadh for over 19 years for causing the death of a differently-abled Saudi boy.
The Saudi apex court dismissed prosecution's appeal against Riyadh Criminal Court's earlier judgment, which had sentenced Abdul Rahim to 20 years in prison. The sentence was first handed down on 26 May and later confirmed by the appellate court on 9 July. The court upheld the argument that a 20-year prison sentence is adequate. No further action will be taken against Rahim in connection with the case. Rahim may be released in December 2026 after completing his prison term.
