Kerala HC raps Union government over rehabilitation

Kerala High Court minced no words while pulling up the Union government on Friday for failing to provide clarity on the loan assistance announced for rehabilitation of people displaced by the massive landslide tragedy that hit Chooralmala and Mundakkai villages in Wayanad district on 30 July last year.

The criticism was directed at the Centre's inability to give a clear response regarding the utilisation of the sanctioned funds.

Irked by the lack of response, the Division Bench questioned whether the Union govern- ment was trying to ‘fish in troubled waters’. Union government had set 31 March as the deadline for utilisation of the loan amount, a condition strongly opposed by the state government terming it as impractical.

The court had sought clarification from the central government, which failed to give a clear answer on Friday, prompting the High Court to chastise the Union government.
