VE Day Pupils create vibrant and moving celebrations
Gloucester Citizen
|May 15, 2025
FROM bunting-lined corridors to heartfelt prayers and 1940s-style tea parties, pupils swapped modern distractions for wartime reflections, marking the 80th anniversary of VE Day in spirited, often moving, celebrations.
-
Across town and countryside alike, staff and students created a vibrant patchwork of remembrance—full of music, storytelling, community, and colour.
At the heart of these commemorations lay a shared purpose: helping the next generation understand what Victory in Europe Day truly meant. For many, this was a living history lesson far removed from textbooks.
At Whitminster C of E Primary, children listened to a recording from a grandparent recalling VE Day first-hand, decades after the original celebration. "They spent the day playing games, baking cakes and learning about the significance of the day," said headteacher Alison Parry-Jones. “It’s so important they understand where we've come from.”
