Not a bore but a tsunami - theory over big 1607 event
Gloucester Citizen
|June 19, 2025
>>> THE Severn Bore is widely regarded as one of the natural wonders of the world.
-
But following geographical surveys in 2004, in a joint venture by Bath Spa University and the University of Wollongong, Australia, the theory was put forward that a particularly lively bore was in fact a Tsunami.
Researchers found deposits of sand, pebbles and shells brought in from the Atlantic Ocean around the estuary including Severnside parts of Gloucestershire.
The event took place in 1607 and was well documented. Writing at the time, William Jones gave a spirited account of "merciless waters of the raging seas" devouring "many hundreds of people both men women, and children with such force and swiftness, that it is almost incredible for any to believe."
If you're a fan of long winded, difficult to understand, randomly punctuated 17 century rants, then you might enjoy "God's warning to his people of England By the great over-flowing of the waters" by William Jones, 1607. But if you're not, then the gist of Mr Jones's puritan pamphlet is that people who fornicate, cheat, lie and miss mass deserve to be thwacked by the wrath of the almighty.
That kind of thing.
