Jago on making SA kickboxing history
George Herald
|October 09, 2025
When the 18-year-old kickboxer Jago de Bruijn from George stepped into the ring at the Flanders International Kickboxing Cup in Belgium, he was the only South African in the entire tournament.
By the end of the weekend, he wasn't just a contender - he was a champion several times over.
De Bruijn captured four gold medals, one silver and the prestigious Flanders Grand Champion title, cementing his place as one of South Africa's most promising young fighters on the international stage.
His performance not only turned heads abroad, but also produced pride back home, proving that local talent can go toe to toe with the best in the world.
Returning home loaded
As Jago de Bruijn returns home with a suitcase full of medals and a heart set on bigger goals, it's clear his journey is just beginning. From the small-town gyms of George to the international spotlight in Belgium, he's proving that South African fighters belong on the world stage.
With his discipline, drive and growing list of titles, Jago isn't just collecting wins - he's building a legacy.
We caught up with Jago to talk about his journey, his mindset in the ring, and what's next for a fighter who's just getting started:
George Herald (GH): You came home with four gold medals, one silver and the Grand Champion title - what does this achievement mean to you personally?
Jago de Bruijn (JdB): It makes me immensely proud to be South African. It's a huge honour and privilege to bring all those medals and trophies back home. Winning gave me a massive boost in confidence and motivation.
GH: Which fight at the Flanders Cup tested you the most, and what did it take to push through?
