BYD Gears Up for Solid-State Battery Revolution, Promises 1,500 km EV Range by 2030

BYD, one of the world’s leading electric vehicle manufacturers, has unveiled its roadmap for a breakthrough in battery technology that could reshape the future of EVs. The company plans to begin demonstrating its all-solid-state battery technology by 2027, with full-scale commercialization expected around 2030. This next-generation battery tech promises to dramatically improve range, charging speed, and safety compared to today’s lithium-ion batteries. Speaking at a recent event, BYD Battery CTO Sun Huajun revealed that the company has already made significant progress, including pilot production of 60Ah solid-state cells. These batteries are expected to offer energy densities in the range of 400-500 Wh/kg—substantially higher than current battery systems—which could enable electric vehicles to achieve ranges of up to 1,500 kilometers on a single charge.

The technology relies on solid electrolytes—most likely sulfide-based—which offer improved thermal stability and reduce the risks associated with overheating and leakage.
