New Delhi puts limits on farm sector offers

IN THE FINAL round of talks that ended late last week, India has clearly conveyed to the US the extent of concessions it can provide in the agriculture sector in the interim trade agreement.
Now, it is up to the Trump administration to see if the deal can be sealed on these terms, sources said.
The talks ended on Friday and US President Donald Trump, on Monday, will start announcing the extent of tariffs he will be imposing on 12 countries that account for the bulk of the country's trade deficit.
US treasury secretary Scott Bessent said on Sunday that the US is focusing on 18 countries in all that are driving 95% of the nation's trade deficit. The US had a trade deficit of $1.2 trillion in 2024 and India is ranked 11th on the list of countries having trade surplus with the US, if the EU is taken as a single entity.
