AMID A SEVERE domestic cooking gas supply squeeze, Indian refiners have increased liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) production by about 10% in the past few days and secured 20 very large gas carrier (VLGC) cargoes totalling around 1 million tonne, mostly from the US, a senior official said on the condition of anonymity.
The move comes as India’s 31-32 million tonne annual LPG requirement faces strain after shipments through the Strait of Hormuz were disrupted amid the Iran war, tightening supplies from West Asia.
The government has also set up a committee of executive directors from state-run oil marketing companies to engage with restaurants and other commercial users and prioritise LPG supplies.
