Maruti Suzuki to discontinue Ciaz

IN A FIRST casualty for midsize sedans, Maruti Suzuki is set to discontinue the Ciaz, which was launched in 2014, sources told FE.

Midsize sedan sales have been falling — from a high of 155,848 units in FY19 to just 78,373 units in FY24. The drop has been quite sharp this year at 29.7%, from 84,840 units in April-January FY24 to just 59,642 units in April-January FY25.

Sales of all models, barring Volkswagen Virtus, have been falling this year. Honda City sales, for instance, dropped 39.5% (from 14,625 units to 8,842 units); Hyundai Verna fell 51.1% (from 26,627 units to 13,022); the Ciaz slid 28.5% (from 9,266 units to 6,629 units); and Skoda Slavia dropped 19.2% (from 16,706 units to 13,501 units). Sales of the Virtus rose marginally by 0.2% (from 17,616 units to 17,648 units).
