THE GOVERNMENT'S RECENT overhaul of the Promotion of Research and Innovation in Pharma-MedTech Sector (PRIP) scheme maystill fall short of creating a robust ecosystem for the development of novel drugs in India, industry experts believe.

Developinganewdrug molecule (new chemical entity) can cost anywhere between $2-4 billion. With a total estimated outlay of 5,000 crore, the scheme is seen as inadequate, even considering that a significant share of funding will need to come from pharmaceutical companies themselves — either as equity or debt, experts said.

The scheme offers direct financial support in the form of non-repayable grants to eligible entities, covering a portion of their project costs overa five-year period.
