INDIAN COMPANIES ARE preparing for a significant disruption in trade ties with the US after President Donald Trump announced a 25% tariff and an unspecified penalty on Indian goods, citing New Delhi's continued defence and energy ties with Russia.

The move, which Trump said would take effect from August 1, 2025, will impact a wide range of sectors, including marine and agricultural products, gems and jewellery, textiles and leather. Pharmaceuticals, and critical minerals have been exempted from the new measures for now. US will continue to allow duty-free imports of laptops, smartphones and servers from India. This is because its investigation under Section 232 on the impact of these products on national security is still continuing.
