Money laundering crackdown focuses on barbershops

BARBERSHOPS in Teignmouth were targeted in a nationwide operation against money laundering.
They were among around 30 barbershops across the South West visited by police and other law enforcement officers as part of Operation Machinize a three-week National Crime Agency co-ordinated crackdown on high street crime.
Officers from the South West Regional Organised Crime Unit (SWROCU), His Majesty's Revenue and Customs, local Trading Standards teams, Home Office immigration enforcement, Environmental Health and the region's fire services were all involved.
Nationally 265 premises were visited, £1 million frozen in bank accounts, 85 warrants, 35 arrests and 97 people safeguarded in relation to potential modern slavery.
Officers seized more than £40,000 in cash, some 200,000 cigarettes, 7,000 packs of tobacco, more than 8,000 illegal vapes and two vehicles.
Two cannabis farms were also found, containing a total of 150 plants.
