Criminal probe as girl aged 12 and boy of 17 die after ‘plunging off pier’
POLICE were today questioning a man on suspicion of manslaughter after a girl aged 12 and a 17-year-old boy died in a half-term tragedy off Bournemouth beach. Emergency services recovered 10 people, all believed to be youngsters, from the water near Bournemouth Pier at around 4.30pm yesterday.
Dorset police said the girl and boy sustained "critical injuries" and later died in hospital while the other eight were treated for injuries that were not life-threatening. An investigation has been launched and a man in his forties, who was “on the water” at the time, was in police custody today.
