Malan falls shy of century as England's fine start evaporates

DAWID MALAN was this morning run out just short of a second World Cup hundred, as England looked in danger of squandering a lightning start against Holland in Pune.
The defending champions are already out of the tournament, having lost six of their seven matches — including five in a row — prior to today, but must win their final two games in order to guarantee a top-eight finish and qualification for the Champions Trophy in two years’ time.
After captain Jos Buttler had won the toss and elected to bat first, Malan (below, in action this morning) smashed three consecutive fours off Logan van Beek's second over of the day on his way to a rapid 50, from just 36 balls.
