THE last surviving Dambuster has died at the age of 101. George Leonard “Johnny” Johnson was the final original member of RAF 617 Squadron’s Second World War raid in 1943. He died peacefully at a care home in Westbury on Trym, Bristol, last night surrounded by his family.
Aged 21, he was a bomb aimer during Operation Chastise, which attacked dams in Germany’s industrial heartland, releasing huge quantities of water into areas used for war production.
