Tradition: Queen’s naval connections
THE Queen’s coffin will be carried during Monday’s funeral procession to Westminster Abbey on a 123-year-old gun carriage towed by 98 Royal Navy sailors in a tradition dating back to the funeral of Queen Victoria.
On the day of Victoria’s funeral in 1901, her coffin was to be carried on the gun carriage through the streets of Windsor. But in the bitter cold of that February day the horses pulling it panicked and reared up, threatening to topple the coffin off the carriage.
Captain Prince Louis of Battenberg — the future First Sea Lord of the Royal Navy — intervened and suggested to the new monarch, Edward VII, that the senior service should step in.
