Stars Rami Malek, Laurence Fishburne and Caitríona Balfe on The Amateur, mentorship and women on screen - the film is in cinemas this weekend

'We all can radiate outwards when we need to'

For American actor Rami Malek, many things make fellow US actor Laurence Fishburne so special on and off screen.

But it's the empathy Fishburne displays, while playing the intimidating Colonel Henderson, in their latest action thriller film The Amateur, that is true testament to the actor's talent.

The 63-year-old first gained recognition for his strong, authoritative roles, particularly after portraying Morpheus in The Matrix trilogy and the Bowery King in the John Wick film series.

"What you do so well is that you can be this powerhouse. You are very intimidating in this film, and can do that in so many roles, but there's just an empathy that you engender immediately that is underlying in you and all of the unique roles", says Malek of Fishburne. "I think that's one small part of what makes you so special on the screen and in life," says the 43-year-old, who won a Primetime Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series in 2016, for his work as computer hacker Elliot Alderson on Mr. Robot.

And now the No Time to Die and Oppenheimer star portrays brilliant CIA cryptographer Charlie Heller in The Amateur.

After his wife Sarah, played by American-British actress Rachel Brosnahan, 34, is killed in a London terrorist attack, Charlie Heller's life is turned upside down.
