Ghostly going's on at Gilnockie

November 21, 2025

Dumfries-based Mostly Ghostly are leading an after-hours investigation at the historic Gilnockie Tower 16th-century Border stronghold near Canonbie tomorrow.

Ghostly going's on at Gilnockie

Associated with legendary Border Reiver, Johnnie Armstrong, and now home to the Clan Armstrong Centre, the tower is believed to date from around 1520. Its dramatic architectural features include a vaulted basement, spiral stair, parapet walk and beacon-stance, and a prehistoric carved stone set into the basement doorway -hinting at a much older story beneath its foundations.

Visitors have reported footsteps on empty stairs, faint voices drifting through the tower, and the unsettling sense of being watched.

Intertwined with the tower's history are a number of curious tales.

There is local lore of a family of three, their loyal hunting dog, and the mysterious 'yin leggit' ghost - a one-legged apparition.
