High-strength beer ban hitting trade, says shop

The Go Local Extra convenience store - which is listed in council documents as Midland Road Convenience Store - sits on the corner of Midland Road and London Road and is known for previously housing the Tiffany Lounge bar, which closed back in 2019.

It opened its doors again in January, 2023 after several months of renovation work and has since operated seven days a week from 6am to 11pm, being allowed to sell alcohol from 8am to 11pm.

Documents released by the council ahead of a licensing hearing today state the business is banned from selling “super strength beer, lager or cider 6.5 per cent ABV or above” at the premises.

The business is looking to replace this condition with a ban that would prevent the sale of alcohol to “any known problem people”.
