CONSERVATIVE LEADER WANTS HSE CHIEFS TO ENSURE COMPLIANCE IS SECURED AFTER PART DEMOLITION OF HERITAGE AFTER FIRE

- By ZENA HAWLEY

A DERBY councillor has raised a formal concern with the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) about the management of asbestos during and after the emergency demolition of the former Derby Hippodrome building after it suffered an arson attack in May.

Following the fire at the Grade II listed building in Green Lane, Derby City Council said that the fire had left “the structure and integrity of the building at risk” and demolition work on some of the structure was carried out.

A few days later a further statement was issued by the city council which said: “Following the fire at the Hippodrome on Friday, works are ongoing to make the site safe. Once this has taken place, building control, supported by Historic England, will decide whether any further demolition work is required.”
