Cold spell alert extended as icy blast closes road

CITY SCHOOL ALSO SHUT AMID FRESH WEATHER WARNING

NEW warnings have been issued for more wintry weather after snow cancelled flights and shut schools.

Hundreds of schools were shut on Monday across the UK, while flights were cancelled and rail lines disrupted.

It comes after temperatures dropped to minus 10.9C at Shap in Cumbria overnight, and 52cm of snow was recorded by the Met Office at Tomintoul in Banffshire.

The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) and the Met Office have extended the duration of the current amber cold-health alert. All regions of England will remain under an amber alert until 10am on Friday, January 9. The alert warns that adverse temperatures are likely to affect health and well-being.
