Assembly Rooms replacement plan 'almost complete'

DERBY'S council leader wants to see the demolition of the city’s Assembly Rooms begin by the end of this year.

Councillor Nadine Peatfield keeps being asked by the public when the almost 50-year-old building will be pulled down and said: “I tell people it won't be far off.”

Ms Peatfield says that the business case for creating a new landmark building in the Market Place is almost complete.

She said: “There are a number of things to do but once that is produced, it will be a case of putting in for planning permission and then demolition can go ahead.”

Permission to demolish the Brutalist-style building had originally been given the go-ahead in 2021, much to the disappointment of campaigners such as the national Twentieth Century Society, but only if a plan for an alternative building had been given approval to prevent a derelict space developing in the city centre.
