On May Bank Holiday Monday every year, Lichfield Greenhill Bower takes place; it is the city’s oldest tradition, dating back to King Henry II's recruitment of troops.

2. St Chad's Church is where the history of Lichfield began. When Chad was appointed bishop of the Mercians in 669, he moved the centre of the see (the central point of reference for the Mercian church) from Repton to Lichfield. He chose a shallow valley for his home, where he founded a monastery beside a well and baptised converts to the Christian faith. After his death, he was buried near the church dedicated to him, but in 700, his body was moved to the newly built cathedral.
