ODD TERMS YOU'LL HEAR DURING THE ASHES

- JAMES MOORE

YOU probably know your “leg before wicket” from your “run out”, but do some of cricket’s terms leave you stumped?

It’s Ashes Week in the Daily Star, as England and Australia get set to go head-to-head in the upcoming series.

Now JAMES MOORE has put together the ultimate guide to the sport’s more obscure lingo, to put you in the box seat as the action unfolds...

Ashes:

Named after an 1882 report that said English cricket had been cremated and taken to Oz.

Agricultural shot:

A shot across the line of the ball.

Bunsen:

A pitch favouring spin, from Cockney rhyming slang: Bunsen Burner - turner.

Chin music:

A rapid short ball, or bouncer, aimed at the batsman’s head or chest.

Cow corner:

A part of the pitch on the batsman’s leg side where he rarely scores.
