The king of the jungle
Daily Star
|November 08, 2025
HE'S the biggest beast in the TV jungle! And now Sir David Attenborough is back with new BBC series Kingdom, following lions, wild dogs, hyenas and leopards in Africa. But with the telly legend due to turn 100 in May, the Daily Star is turning the tables to examine this fascinating creature itself. We've spent years in our living rooms observing this incredible species at first hand to understand its unique behaviours. Now JAMES MOORE reveals the ultimate spotter's guide...

What: David Attenborough
Latin name: Davidius attenbeastius
Features: Easily identified by its white mane, blue-shirted torso and khaki legs, this sleek animal grows to about 5ft 10in. It sports large teeth, which a BBC memo once found troubling, but does have good vision, having been the first to put snooker on the telly as a TV exec and give the thumbs-up to new comedy Monty Python.
Call: One of the most recognised in the animal world, it can create soothing sounds but has learned to howl like a wolf too. Its distinctive call has even been used to comment on the video of Adele's single Hello.
Plumage: Among his displays are a degree in natural sciences from Cambridge, a knighthood, honorary degrees and a clutch of BAFTAs.
Habitat: Having once been confined largely to Leicester, it has spread to all parts of the world - apart from North Korea. It's both a land and sea-based creature, having once served in the Royal Navy. However, it's most likely found in its natural home of Richmond upon Thames.
Migration: For The Life Of Birds documentary alone, it travelled a huge 256,000 miles.
