RYAN: Glasses are the smart choice

FAMED for the diversity of his roles - everything from a drug-addled teacher in Half Nelson to a bleached-blond Ken in Barbie three-times Oscar nominee Ryan Gosling is now having a sci-fi moment.

His new box office smash is Project Hail Mary, about an astronaut who befriends an alien in order to save both of their planets.

And he's also staring in Star Wars: Starfighter, which is due for release on May 28 next year.

But he thanks his daughter for the styling of Ryland Grace, the grade 8 science teacher reluctantly sent by the government to a star system 11.9 light years from Earth, in Project Hail Mary. He says: "I was playing around with the character and trying to put on stuff and I put on glasses as a joke almost.

"My daughter came by and she was like 'you look smarter in glasses! And I was like, 'Well, then, I'll wear them."

It certainly did no harm, as Project Hail Mary, which is based on the novel by Andy Weir and opened in the UK last week, has so far raked in £122million worldwide - the biggest movie debut of the year.
