POPE Francis's extraordinary life saw him go from nightclub bouncer and janitor to taking the top job in the Catholic Church.

He was born Jorge Mario Bergoglio in Buenos Aires, Argentina, the eldest of five children in an Italian family.

On leaving school, he qualified as a chemical technician and worked in the food industry.

At 21 he had part of a lung removed due to a severe bout of pleurisy, which was to leave him vulnerable to the winter weather.
