The Snow must go on

Snow White first popped up in an 1812 collection of folktales by German Brothers Grimm, Jacob and Wilhelm, and was called “Sneewittchen”.

The pair updated it in 1854.

Their original story had familiar features like the magic mirror, but differed from movie versions in details such as having the queen dying after dancing in red hot slippers.

The seven dwarfs didn’t get names until a 1912 Broadway play where they were called Blick, Flick, Glick, Snick, Pick, Whick, and Quee.

They were renamed Doc, Grumpy, Happy, Sleepy, Bashful, Sneezy and Dopey for the 1937 movie. Names rejected by film-makers included Biggy-Wiggy, Blabby and Flabby.

Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs was the first full-length animated film. Walt Disney had to mortgage his house to make it.
