Defence chiefs have ordered the special forces to draw up plans that would see them operating alongside other European troops.

It is understood one option being considered is to use the SBS to target the top people smugglers as part of a multinational response.

Members of MI5, MI6, and investigators working with Border Force officials are already tracking the criminal masterminds.
