O'Neill fears video refs could cause title race carnage as he blasts intervention in Trusty incident as 'ridiculous'

MARTIN O'NEILL fears VAR could wreck the title race as the Celtic boss hit out at the decision to uphold Auston Trusty's controversial red card.

The Hoops defender will serve a three-match suspension - which includes Sunday's Old Firm clash at Ibrox - after his appeal was bounced out by SFA beaks.

O'Neill was furious VAR official Grant Irvine got involved in the incident despite whistler Matthew MacDermid seeing the flashpoint with Hibs star Jamie McGrath.

The Parkhead manager wants video refs to butt out unless incidents are clear and obvious errors. And he's concerned meddling from Clydesdale House could have an impact on the Premiership run-in.

O'Neill said: "It very well could. That could happen at the end of it all.

"I did the interview after the game and someone asked if we were going to appeal.

"I thought, 'Well, I am really not sure about it because the appeals in this day and age are seemingly worthless'.
